Belgium Defense Minister: Drones Are Future of Warfare Like Gunpowder in 1300s

Belgium's Defense Minister Theo Francken declared drones as 'the future of warfare' at the Drone Summit 2025 in Latvia, comparing their revolutionary impact to gunpowder in the Hundred Years War. The statement came as Belgium and Turkey announced plans to join the 18-member Drone Coalition for Ukraine, which invested €1.8 billion in drone production for Ukraine in 2024. The coalition is on course to provide €2 billion of additional funding in 2025 as drone technology proves decisive in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

I really believe that this is the future of warfare, like gunpowder was in the Hundred Years War. Drone technology and drone warfare will be decisive in the Russian-Ukrainian war, and we need to jump on this train.

Ukraine has set ambitious targets to produce 4.5 million military drones in 2025, while the effectiveness of cheap uncrewed aerial vehicles has been demonstrated in offsetting Russia's equipment and personnel advantages. The technology has transformed modern warfare through surveillance, targeted attacks, and sophisticated long-range strike capabilities.
